Notes for James Lowery SR


Misc, I have used the spelling of LOWERY as this is my maiden name.
The same man might have his named spelled differently in the
same document. My Benjamin H spelled it Lowery but his brother
William Chappel spelled it as Lowry. It is a Scott-Irish name.
The 3 most popular spellings seem to be LOWERY, LOWREY, LOWRY[jameslowery120599.FTW]

He was a farmer & given a grant of 200 acres on waters of Falling Creek in Elbert Co, bounded by Joshua Sewell, H McDonald, James Lowry, John Baker, & William Lowry which land was granted to said Lowry by his honor George Mathews the 25 of Feb 1795. Recorded in Book KKK-808. He & Honor sold this land 19 April 1799. Recorded in Book F-19. He was given a few other grants over a period of years in Franklin Co GA. Honor, Benjamin & John Wesley sold this land 9 Jan 1826, Recorded in Book BB-79.


James made his will 9 Dec 1820, it reads as: In the name of God, Amen, I James Lowrey Sr (sic) of the state of Ga & county of Franklin, being of sound mind & disposing memory do make & publish this my last will & testament in the manner & form following: (1) After all debts are lawfully paid I give &
bequeath to my beloved wife, Onner/Anner, the third of the tract of land where on I now live, that is to say the whole of the rent & net income arising from the same, one dark bay mare named Frances, her side saddle, bridle & her choice of two cows & calves, her choice of all my cattle, all my household &
kitchen furniture, all my stocks of hogs, during her natural life or widowhood. (2) I give to my two sons say, Benjamin Lowrey & John Wesley Lowrey, at the death or close of widow hood of my now wife, Onner/Anner, all the tract of land where on I now live & two other tract of land I now own joining this tract, the three tracts containing 556 & 1/2 acres, & my wagon to be equally divided between them both each, to have & share alike. All the rest of my property I bequeath to all my children say; Benjamin Lowrey, Henry Lowrey, Mary Holbrook, Christopher Lowrey, Sally Lowrey, Aby Trimble, & John Wesley Lowrey to be equally divided between them all, each share & share alike. I revoke all other wills or will here tofore by me made at any time, ordaining, ratifying & publishing this to be my last will & testament, constituting & appointing James Lowrey SM/LM? & my son John Wesley Lowrey my sole executors to this my last will & testament in witness where of I the said James Lowrey Sr have hereunto set my hand & seal this 9th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & twenty, in the presents of Clement Dollar, Burdett Leach, Samuel F Gerrald. The will was probated in the September term of 1824. The GA State Archives say this is copy of the ORIGINAL will. Book OM-8A)
